Dowel pins are precision-ground cylindrical fasteners used primarily for accurate alignment of two or more components. Unlike bolts (which carry clamping loads) or keys (which transmit torque), dowel pins serve a specific purpose: ensuring that mating parts are positioned with repeatable, micron-level accuracy every time they are assembled.

Why Use Dowel Pins?

Consider a two-part mold for injection molding. The two halves must align perfectly every cycle, or the molded parts will have visible parting lines and dimensional errors. Bolts alone cannot guarantee this precision because bolt holes always have clearance. Dowel pins, pressed into precision-reamed holes, provide the exact repeatability needed.

Key Principle: Dowel pins are alignment devices, not load-bearing fasteners. The structural load should always be carried by bolts, clamps, or other fastening methods. The dowel pin simply ensures the parts are in the right position.

Types of Dowel Pins

Solid Dowel Pins (Parallel Pins)

The most common type. Precision-ground solid cylinders with tight diameter tolerances (typically ISO m6 or h6). They are pressed into reamed holes with an interference fit.

Hollow Dowel Pins (Tubular Pins)

Lightweight alternative to solid pins. The hollow center allows slight compression during insertion, making them more forgiving of hole tolerance variations.

Tapered Dowel Pins

Conical pins with a standard taper of 1:50. The taper ensures a self-locking fit that gets tighter as the pin is driven in. Easy to remove by tapping from the narrow end.
