Bolt loosening is one of the most persistent and dangerous failure modes in heavy industrial machinery. A single loose bolt in a rotating assembly can cascade into catastrophic equipment failure, unplanned downtime, and serious safety hazards. In this guide, we examine why bolts loosen and the most effective modern methods to prevent it.

Why Do Bolts Loosen?

There are three primary mechanisms that cause bolt loosening:

Traditional Methods and Their Limitations

Spring Washers (Grower Washers)

The most commonly used anti-loosening device. However, multiple independent studies have shown that spring washers provide no measurable resistance to vibration-induced loosening. In Junker vibration tests, bolted joints with spring washers loosen at nearly the same rate as joints without any locking device.

Lock Nuts (Nylon Insert / Prevailing Torque)

Nylon-insert lock nuts provide good resistance to loosening but are limited to temperatures below 120 degrees C (where the nylon insert softens). All-metal prevailing torque nuts handle higher temperatures but provide less consistent locking force.

Thread Locking Compound

Adhesive-based locking (e.g., Loctite) is effective for permanent assemblies but makes disassembly difficult and is unsuitable for joints requiring regular maintenance or inspection.

The Modern Solution: Wedge-Lock Washers

Wedge-lock washers (also called Nord-Lock type washers) represent the most reliable bolt-locking technology available today. They work on a fundamentally different principle than traditional methods.

How They Work

A wedge-lock washer consists of two paired washers with opposing cam surfaces on the mating faces and radial serrations on the outer faces. When the bolt is tightened:

DIN 25201 Standard: Wedge-lock washers are the only locking device approved under DIN 25201 (the German railway standard for bolt-locking) without requiring additional security measures. This standard is considered the gold benchmark for vibration resistance.
